LAND, SKY, AND SPIRIT: Finding Utopia in Mesilla Valley, 2016
4' 35" HD video without sound
“Land, Sky, and Spirit: Finding Utopia in Mesilla Valley” explores the intersection of people, landscape, and spiritual quests that define the Mesilla Valley in southern New Mexico. This work portrays the experimental utopia of the Las Cruces-based Shalam Colony(1884-1901) and its founder John Newbrough as an entry point into the human longing for freedom and the pursuit of a better life, often characterized by making a fresh start in a new place. Hye Young Kim’s video enables the viewer to enter into the space through the landscape, conveying a sense of new beginnings in a spiritual, natural setting. Tina Rapp’s poem is integrated into the video to evoke the sense of a rugged place and its harsh, inspirational beauty.
