CONSUMING MY PARENTS
10min, two channel HD video, 2012

My two-channel video, titled “Consuming My Parents” introduces to the viewer a gesture to know the taste of my genetic heritage by simultaneously loving/hating and accepting/denying my parents. Physically tasting a representation of my parents’ faces is illustrative of an intimate and resonant desire for knowledge, for connection, for consumption. From the perspective of genetics, licking a visual representation of my parents is a gesture with which I accept my own genetic code: the color of my eyes, my hair and my skin. From a psychological perspective, the complete erasure of my parents’ image at the end of the video represents a gesture of psychological independence. Even though I completely erase my parents’ representation, my physical existence itself is the most vivid evidence of their existence. I could not exist without their existence. There is no deconstruction without construction.
